Doing my floor duty* today made me realize one thing: the cinema isn't that much of a special place anymore.
When the doors are opened and the credits start to roll, everyone will start getting up and walk towards the exit, without giving so much of a thought to the disaster they have left behind.
Empty mineral bottles.
Squashed plastic cups.
Scattered popcorn on the carpeted floor.
Strewn snacks on the seats.
Popcorn buckets being dumped unceremoniously everywhere.
The cinema suddenly seems ordinary. Used. Damaged. And in most cases, it is treated conveniently as a dumpster to accommodate the junk left behind by irresponsible patrons.
Even though cleaning up the cinema isn't in of my job description, I feel sorry for those poor and aged cleaners who have been doing this ghastly job for 10 years - cleaning up other people's rubbish.
As I take my torch to shine below the seats, checking for any items left behind by the customers, my eyes can't help but look at the cleaners in a sorry way, picking up all the trash and sweeping the spilt popcorn on the ground.
I don't know about you but I have never left my popcorn bucket and drink behind in the cinema after the show is finished. I would take them along with me and toss it into the rubbish bin situated right outside the cinema.
If you are reading this, please, think of the cleaners who have to clean up your junk. Make those poor souls' job easier by disposing your own rubbish. They have a huge, blue rubbish bin near the wall outside the exit for you to throw away your stuff.
And even if you can't be bothered to take your trash along with you to the exit, please don't make a bloody mess in the cinema by spilling more than half of the popcorn on the floor. I see that almost every time when I'm in the cinema. I don't know whether those people do it on purpose or what, but, ugh, it's just so infuriating!
Yawn, I'm dead beat. Can't believe I just typed that with my eyelids drooping.
*Floor duty: tearing tickets, checking the cinema whether it's clean for the next show, showing customers their seats if they can't find it, opening the cinema doors when the show's about to end.
