valentine's day The Animals at the Faire

valentine's day valentine's day

Aubergine 18" high porcelain Dragon with forehead horn.

On my last visit to the Sacramento Antique Faire, I came across a number of interesting creatures. I had originally gone to find a table, and to hunt for additions for my various collections. Also, I do like to take pictures of the more unique finds I stumble upon for you all to see. This trip, I noticed a distinct trend to the photos as I was sorting through them for a post. Animals of various kinds stood out from the rest of the photos, and I began to think about finding homes for all of these strays.

I saw this porcelain dragon, which was quite large and fantastically colored. And I imagined that he would enjoy a home like this:

Art dealer Gian Enzo Sperone might find a spot for him among the ceramic figures by Paolo Maione in his New York loft, above.

I spied this two foot high plaster pug just hanging around. I think he would be right at home in Liz Lambert's bunkhouse outside of Marfa, Texas. The slate colored walls and salvaged billboard would provide the perfect setting for this comical pup:

The brown ceramic elephant standing about a foot high (top), and the vintage metal elephant penny bank both have a rustic natural quality that appealed to me.

I don't think that designer T. Keller Donovan would mind too terribly if these pachyderms made themselves at home on his antique Irish pub table. I love the mix of natural textures and colors here, and the mix of objects.

This sheepdog was one of my favorites. I like to think of him as a "faux-Jeff-Koons-puppy" (I posted about this puppy here). Maybe if I painted the nose and tongue white? No? Well anyway, this pup might still look cool in a house like this:

This very chic house is owned by taste makers Franco Mariotti and Alessandra Tabacchi Mariotti, owners of the very stylish modern and antique furnishing shop, FLAIR ( Florence, Milan, Capri and New York locations).

So tell me....do you all do this too? I mean, do you see something that catches your eye and immediately imagine the sort of place it should call home? It seems to be a little game I play, and perhaps it just comes with the territory of the creative world.

valentine's day In the Pink: Breast Cancer Awareness Day

In an effort to raise awareness, I have posted some of my favorite magazines who decided that PINK was the perfect color for the cover. I hope you all enjoy, and don't forget to schedule that mammogram appointment or give a gentle reminder to those you love!

valentine's day Under the Sea

Summer is almost here, and I am constantly battling my seaside daydreams to try and focus on work. But sometimes a girl just has to get away.

valentine's day valentine's day

Dreamweaver Barry Dixon put together an underwater fantasy for a couple in Palm Beach modeling the motif after the Italian baroque love of seashell and grotto designs. The details are everywhere: the custom chandelier, Barry likens to an octopus; in the Living Room he used a cornice cast from real shells; there is seaweed-like fabric on the chair; the aqua and green color scheme echoes the colors of the sea.

I have to say I was pleased, yet again, to see that Metropolitan Home was thinking outside the glass box when they included this home in their June issue. While there are many contemporary elements to this Neptune's Palace, such as the bare terrazzo floors, there is also an abundance of traditional and whimsical luxury.

The Master Bedroom is a bit more subtle, yet still contributes to the overall undersea effect.

The Master Bath has just that right mix of antique and contemporary, high and low, that makes it perfect in my eyes. (The lantern is only $29!)

Artisan Cathy Jarman was let loose in the Powder Room and created a true grotto effect.

Oh, BTW, Barry Dixon has a new book scheduled to be released this fall. For Info, click here.

Elle Decor featured another Palm Beach house in their June issue. Owner Jack Staub just threw this little shell mirror together. Just another little weekend DIY project. Seriously, he has to be one talented guy. When describing the house, partner Renny Reynolds says: "Have you ever seen so many Buddhas? It's not exactly Zen austere." My kind of guy.

Photo from "Tony Duquette" by Wendy Goodman and Hutton Wilkinson

So just who started all of this shell underwater cool craziness anyway? Was it Tony Duquette with his over the top fabulous creations like the chandelier above? You'd have to go back a bit farther back than that. This tradition of creating beautiful objects out of shells dates at least as far back as the Renaissance. Rich merchants and scholars across the European continent were collecting and trading shells in the 1500's. Rooms were encrusted with shells, mirrors and boxes and furniture as well. Some wonderful examples:

valentine's day LA VIE EN ROSE

"Life in Pink"
The English translation of "La Vie en Rose", signature song of French singer Edith Piaf, ........ It sounds to me like a wonderful way to begin my year.

If you have not yet seen this incredible film, please do not hesitate. Chronicling the tragically short life of French icon Edith Piaf, it will make you want to travel more, do more, live more because you don't know when life can be cut short. Edith surely fit a large life into her 47 years. You really have no excuse not to indulge yourself, as the film is now on DVD. The story is heartrendingly beautiful, funny and sad. The acting is brilliant. The Music is, well, incomparably and classically French. C'est magnifique!
