valentine's day Liking These... Spool No. 72

The Sage Burrow Rucksack

Spool No. 72 Clothing Company sent me an email with some new things. Always having design on my mind, I tend to link fashion and rooms in my mind, well, almost always. I imagine the sort of person that has an interesting piece of clothing and what their house might look like. So, here is a glimpse of how the wheels spin in my head.

Thanks Spool No. 72 for the inspiration!

valentine's day Did You Know About This Show?

"Launch My Line" Cast

I received an email this morning about Architect David Applebaum becoming a contestant on Bravo's latest Reality TV Design Competition: Launch My Line. David is an L.A. based architect who has worked with celebrities such as Frank Sinatra, Diane Keaton, Rupert Murdoch and Cuba Gooding Jr. Curious, I went on over to the Bravo website to check it out.
So here is the deal. Ten fashion designers already in the biz are being paired with ten professionals (in creative fields like music, architecture, event planning and so on...) that have always wanted to have their own fashion line. The teams will battle it out to see who creates the best fashion line. Dean and Dan Caten of DSQUARED2 host and judges including Stefani Greenfield and Lisa Kline. Click HERE to read all about it.

I guess what caught my attention is that one of the contestants is an architect (that's David Applebaum, bottom row, second from the right), which brings me to the point. Fashion and Interior Design are so intertwined and interdependent aren't they? You can just look at the recent auction of the amazing collection of furniture and artifacts of Yves Saint Laurent to realize the close connection. I suppose that anyone in a creative field thinks about what they are wearing and will fantasize about designing their own clothes. Haven't you always thought, "if I could just find a blouse ( sweater, dress....) like the one in my head, I would be happy!" Well now we get to see how that works for us creative types.
The show starts December 2. What do you think? Will you be tuning in?

Dan and Dean.....or Dean and Dan

It will be fascinating in and of itself to watch Dan and Dean in conversation. They complete each other.

valentine's day What do Mrs. Jetplane and Valentino have in common...

Well maybe a little more than you think...

valentine's day
He owns 6 adorable pugs, Milton, Monty, Maude, Margot, Maggie and Molly.

He has been quoted as saying "I don't care about the collection. My dogs are much more important".

Take a look at this clip from his new documentary The Last Emperor.

I adored YSL's documentary and this appers to be very much in that same line. No I didn't allow Milo to watch this clip. He'll be very jealous.

Oh Mr. Valentino... why did you not enter Pugapalooza??

valentine's day Fun for the weekend: Christian Louboutin

valentine's day valentine's day

I don't own a pair. Let's just be clear about that. Although I wouldn't mind being solvent enough to go there.

But ANYONE can enjoy this. It's fun and it's free. You know...recession proof. I especially love the impatient heel stomping.

Have a great weekend!

valentine's day What to Wear, The deYoung Museum and Yves Saint Laurent

The YSL Vault

Every year I fumble through my closet and wonder what I have to wear for New Years Eve. And every year, I realize....I have nothing. Can you imagine having a closet full of haute couture clothes AND the places to wear them?! Not many can. And there is only one who had the imagination to fill a closet like that quite like Yves Saint Laurent.

Last weekend, I jumped in the car with family in tow to San Francisco for the day. The first thing on the schedule was the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park where an amazing exhibit of inspiring fashion representing the forty years of the Yves Saint Laurent Fashion House was on display. I could have stayed for hours. Dresses, coats, pant suits, jackets, shoes, hats.....what could be a more wonderful way to spend a cold winter day, but surrounded by the luxury of it all?

Yves Saint Laurent was particularly well known for redefining what a woman should/could wear. From the late 50's on, YSL was creating new silhouettes like the trapeze dress for women, and borrowing from men's wardrobes :the pea coat, the safari jacket, the trench and the pinstripe suit creating new classics that would eventually end up in every woman's wardrobe.

His imagination was limitless. Drawing inspiration from imaginary travels, art, literature, flora and fauna, YSL created a body of work that is hard to surpass.

YSL loved glamour and a woman's body. His creations were meant to celebrate the feminine form sometimes baring all.

There was so much to see...I went through the exhibit three times while the rest of the family toured the rest of the deYoung. This is just a small smattering of the lusciousness. There are over 125 outfits fully accessorized with amazing attention to detail. Sketches of many of YSL's works, videos and a biographical life history brings it all to life.

The exhibit runs through the 5th of April for those of you in the Bay Area between now and then. To find out more click here and here. For those of you who cannot attend, I highly recommend this:

Available through Amazon, this book should be on your "must have" list. Full of beautiful photos and many many sketches that are not part of the exhibit, you can see the genius that was Yves Saint Laurent. It is a perfect way to celebrate the life and imagination of YSL. (1936-2008)
