The winner of the December Iron Cupcake SF Challenge received a custom made glass tray from E & R Glassworks. This tray was custom made to include the infamous Iron Cupcake logo.

Trays were also on display that had been designed for the host of the Iron Cupcake SF Challenges, the Leland Tea Company. E & R Glassworks completely outdid themselves with these!

Congratulations to December's winner, Colleen, pictured here with the artists who created these gorgeous trays!

Congratulations to all of the bakers in the December challenge and throughout 2010 - it was a great year for cupcakes!

valentine's day All I could want in a tattoo half-sleeve

I love almost all cupcake tats, but this one, with rainbows, hearts and stars and bows and happiness makes me smile ear to ear.

valentine's day One of the most beautiful cupcakes I've ever seen

Definitely too beautiful to eat! This weeping willow cupcake is by custom dessert company Ladybug Luggage in Princeton, New Jersey via Flickr. Seriously, just ponder this for a few seconds. I don't know what it's made of, but I know it's truly a work of art. Find out more about them at their blog and website. They can be reached at LadybugLuggage at gmail.com or 732-232-5002.

valentine's day Crocker Museum's New Gwathmey Siegel Addition

valentine's day
The Original Crocker Art Museum
Last Sunday, my mom and I, along with thousands of other art enthusiasts, decided we had to be a part of the opening day of the Crocker Art Museum's new addition. We have always known the Crocker in it's beautifully historic Victorian incarnation, having been donated to the City of Sacramento and the California Museum Association by Margaret Crocker in 1885.

Original Crocker Art Museum Entrance
On 10.10.10, the new and very modern addition designed by Gwathmey Siegel and Associates was officially opened to the public. And what an opening! As we approached the building (I had been following progress for months prior to seeing it finished) there was a definite air of celebration. Parked on the street and in the park in front of the museum was a huge collection of cars on display. Not just any cars. These were from the Art Cars Fest 2010.These are cars decorated by artists who use them in their daily lives. I will have more on them later!

The new building is very modern and creates a beautiful counterpoint to the Victorian tradition. For much more information about the design and process, click HERE.

New Expansion by Gwathmey Siegal
As soon as we entered, we were sold. The spaces soared, as did our spirits. I cannot tell you how we felt. A feeling of civic pride, sure, but also a feeling of excitement and anticipation that we were going to be able to have access to this fantastic new facility.

New Entry look out to the Original Crocker
We noticed how many volunteers were on hand to answer questions and direct traffic flow. Everyone was knowledgeable, helpful and enthusiastic to be a part of something grand. Their enthusiasm is quite catching. Both my mom and I are planning to become much more involved with the museum.

And the space is awesome (to quote a teenager that happened to be standing near us). I discovered that the cafe in the Museum is under the direction of one of my favorite Sacramento restaurateurs, Patrick Mulvaney, owner of Mulvaney's Building and Loan. More info about the cafe HERE. I will be back.....often.

We were advised to head up to the third floor, the main exhibit halls, before they became too crowded...so up we went....

Rapunzel just got us in the mood for more. The third floor is where the main exhibition galleries are located. We were lucky to see a couple of the galleries full of art that has been promised to the museum by generous donors. I was not able to take pictures here, but there was plenty more to see in the may other gallery spaces....

This is an example of the spaces allotted to contemporary art....The skylights you see are the sawtooth design on the building exterior. They are reminiscent of the old factories in the Sacramento area....

I have included just some of the pieces that stopped me in my tracks. There is so much to see that we are going to be coming back throughout the year.

Entering the Original Crocker
Not only did the Crocker treat us to an uplifting new addition to the Sacramento Cultural scene with the museum opening, they also reminded us there is a wealth of culture in the arts that are just as important. The Grand Opening had dancers from Mexico.....

I wish that I could have stayed longer, but other commitments were calling....and we promised ourselves we would be back often.

On the way out, I stopped into the Museum gift shop and saw a couple of things to add to my Holiday wish list....

valentine's day
Crocker Art Museum and the New Expansion
The Crocker Art Museum has been a Sacramento treasure since the original building, once the home of the Crocker family, was given to the City of Sacramento and the California Museum Association in 1885. The historic buildings heve been married to an expansion project that has tripled the Museum's size. This new expansion designed by the World Class architecture firm, Gwathmey Siegal and Associates Architects, opens this Sunday to great fanfare. It is where I will be spending my Sunday! (And I will be taking pictures!)

I apologize for my blog absence the last few days! I have been very busy with projects I hope to be able to show you all soon!

I the meantime, I came across this very fun website today and thought you might like to play around with it over the weekend. By now you have all seen the graphic wall stickers that can be used to jazz up a kid's room, or give a little lift to a blah living room. Perfect for rentals, they can be taken right down when you are ready to move.

valentine's day 405.jpg

Silviastickers takes the idea a step further. (Fun website music too). You can create your own ideas right online and see how it will look. Create art, wall murals, decorate furniture...your imagination is your only limit.

Thought it was fun....enjoy!

And have a brilliant weekend!

valentine's day Bronze Age....Weekend Art

valentine's day

My family avidly attends the Second Saturday Art Walk in Sacramento whenever possible. We will be there this weekend as a matter of fact. We have a couple of artful daughters, you see. We usually gather a gaggle of girls together and let them wander at will through the mid-town galleries and listen to the local musicians that set up on every street corner. It is a very "happening" spot on the weekends, and a huge party every Second Saturday.

If you love art, like we do, and are in the San Francisco or the Bay Area area this weekend....why not create your own Second Saturday and stop into Gumps? Gumps has been hosting an amazing Bronze Show for the last couple of weeks. If you have not seen it yet, you are missing something special. It runs through March 14th...and the collection is quite brilliant.

valentine's day The Stars Were Out Last Night

valentine's day valentine's day

Margaret Russell, the star of Elle Decor, and as well as author of the newest addition to my library, Style and Substance, was shining at Gumps in San Francisco last night. Always beautiful, always gracious, Margaret was there for a book signing party.

valentine's day valentine's day

Style and Substance has been one of my "go to" resource books since it came out. Each chapter is organized by room, and since it is a compilation of the best from Elle Decor, it is simply the book I pull from the shelf first when looking for inspiration for my design projects. And now it has been signed. Sigh...I am one of those who loves to have my favorite books signed whenever possible.

It was wonderful to have a chance to chat with Margaret. There are brilliantly big plans in the works for Elle Decor, particularly exciting for all f us design groupies! So keep an eye out and an ear open in the months to come. I promise to keep you posted!

And the party was packed with other stars from the City by the Bay. Designers Jay Jeffers, Ken Fulk, Scot Meacham Wood (also of Tartanscot!), Claudia Juestel, Gary Hutton, George Brazil, and Furniture designer Paul Benson were there, just to name a few.

valentine's day valentine's day

The setting was perfect. It is always so much fun to wander through Gumps. Everywhere you turn, there are perfect little scenes that give you ideas, and wonderful gifts for the special ones in your life. (Stay tuned for my blog post in the next couple of days...lots of valentine's day Goodies!!)

Delicious bits of things to eat (the miniature Beef Wellington's were fabulous!), good wine and great converstion all made for a a stellar evening.

My good freind Jori, made the jaunt to San Francisco with me. She is one of those people that has fun wherever she goes, and seems to know everyone within minutes.

valentine's day valentine's day

Here she is with designer George Brazil and furniture designer Paul Benson. George and Jori go way back, and you may remember the genius of Paul Benson from this blog post where his beautiful bar cart is shown off.

valentine's day valentine's day

I had a chance to chat with Jay Jeffers who is deep in the middle of multiple projects right now. Charming and handsome, he is one of the designers I love to watch.

valentine's day valentine's day

My good blogging buddy Scot Meacham Wood (Tartanscot) was there. He is always so much fun! Scot just had an amazing trip to NYC where he met up with lots of favorite bloggers like Eddie Ross, Habitually Chic's Heather Clawson. Claudia Juestel of Adeeni Design Group was also on hand. Claudia is a wonderful designer who is a master with the exotic.

I wish I had had more time to show you more of the beauty at Gumps, but I did take a few shots.

There is a sculptor by the name of Gary Stevens that I was quite taken with.

valentine's day valentine's day

This is an alabaster sculpture he did that I thought was so beautiful in this vignette. The stone was so thin and fine! I understand that Gary is a mathematician as well, which explains his precision and fine detail.

valentine's day valentine's day

These wood sculptures are also by Gary Stevens. Some look like continous ribbons. Brilliant!

valentine's day valentine's day

Also showing were these perfect wooden vessels by Philip Moulthrop. Each one a small masterpeice. To read more about Philip and his family history of woodturning craftsmanship, click HERE.

valentine's day valentine's day

I also had the pleasure to speak with Marta Benson of Gumps, who was excited about the new direction Gumps is taking with tableware. Gumps is well known for it's tradition of offering the best in fine china, crystal and placesettings. Alway beautiful, always the best. But Gumps has been changing over the last few years. There is a powerful trend towards beautiful but more casual entertaining and Gumps is the place where you will be finding young, fresh, and casual table settings that will be fun and usable everyday. I am looking forward to it all!

Such a fun night! Thanks to everyone at Gumps, Margaret Russell and Elle Decor for a great evening!
