valentine's day Summer is Here: Master Bedroom Refresher

valentine's day valentine's day Sometimes things converge all at once to make one act. Recently, I had done a blog post about Saffron Marigold showing a peek at the new shams and duvet cover I had just purchased (I highly recommend them!) . Then I got a comment from a reader asking to see them in my bedroom. And then I was listening to the latest Skirted Roundtable about refreshing decor for the summer.....I am right there with you ladies!
SO.....here is my refreshed and renewed Master Bedroom just in time for our 100+ degree heat. I feel cooler just looking at my new bedding.
Thanks Saffron Marigold!

valentine's day Cool: Saffron Marigold

valentine's day
My New Duvet and Shams!!
I am so happy to have stumbled upon a bedding line called Saffron Marigold while searching for a new duvet cover and shams for my bedroom. I was online and googled "Indian Bedding" when I found them. The name alone was conjuring up beautiful exotic images in my head. I was hoping that the company was as good as it looked when I ordered what appeared to be the perfect Summertime bedding. I chose a black on white paisley pattern.

Saffron Marigold's pretty stationary
Let me just say.....I am extremely impressed all around. Saffron Marigold emailed me a confirmation immediately, and the next day emailed me that my items had been shipped. Two days later (I had asked for standard shipping) my package appeared (granted, I realized when ordering that the company is based in Petaluma, California....I'm only a couple of hours away...but still!!). It beat the Crate and Barrel bedding I ordered by two weeks!
When I opened up the box, a handmade paper envelope made with Marigold petals caught my eye. So pretty. Inside was a beautiful card printed with the company's logo with information and care instructions inside. What an impressive touch! Details like this make my day. I would not hesitate to have a box like this delivered to my clients.
The duvet and a just as impressive. I expected the block print on the front to be like the photo on the website. But I was pleasantly surprised by the small blue paisley print on the opposite side. So fresh and pretty! I feel like I got two looks in one. Really great quality and the fabric is really nice. Best of all....the pricing is right where it should be....fair and affordable!
Two thumbs up!!!
Here is a little background and some of the other prints available from Saffron Marigold.

Carving a Wood Block
Indian fabrics are printed using a wood block method where detailed patterns are painstakingly carved into the wood.
valentine's day
Here is an example of a particularly intricate pattern.

valentine's day
Many of the patterns are in medallion forms like this one, and the pattern I chose for myself. Others are all over patterns like the one below. Almost always there is a decorative border along the edges, and bedding is printed to the size of the duvet or sham, so there is a border along all of the edges.

Here is just a sampling of what can be found at Saffron Marigold.... You are bound to find something perfect for summer!

valentine's day Breezy Weekends: Plum Pretty Sugar

valentine's day valentine's day

With the warm (hot!) weather we get in Sacramento in the summer, I am always drawn to anything that looks fresh and breezy. So I was very happy when Charlotte Mills, sent me a little note to introduce herself and her line of bedding and lounge wear to me. Plum Pretty Sugar is the name of the line Charlotte creates from fabrics she has found in India, and they are nothing if not wonderfully fresh and beautiful.

valentine's day valentine's day

They remind me of something from Designer's Guild or John Robshaw, but with a price point that is much more in the realm of possibility for most of us. Duvet Covers range in price from $100 to $190 depending on fabric and size. Shams are approximately $50/pair.

valentine's day valentine's day

This Paisley print I am thinking about for myself! I love white and brown together, and this would be perfect for my Guest Room!

valentine's day valentine's day

And this Indian Pink print may end up in one of my girls' rooms. Sigh. I am feeling that way one feels when they spread a newly laundered sheet on a bed and it is smooth and cool.

valentine's day valentine's day

Charlotte shows her bedding, robes, lounge wear, dresses and accessories through her Etsy shop, here. You can find her full line, but here are a couple of teasers for you:

Tunic Dress/Top, $68

Kimono Style Robe, $70
I hope you have a chance to visit and get to know Charlotte and her beautiful things!
Have a Fresh and Breezy Weekend!

valentine's day Restoration Hardware: baby & child

valentine's day valentine's day

I don't know if you all noticed that Brocade Home, a subsidiary of Restoration Hardware, is no longer taking orders. Perhaps it is because of the launch of this site: Restoration Hardware Baby & Child.

valentine's day valentine's day
I was looking for a Dining Table and noticed the new logo at the top of RH's website, so decided to check it out. There are quite a few nice things here (like the sweet personalized crown piece above).

valentine's day valentine's day

The furniture, I would suspect, is the same high quality you would expect from the parent site. This four poster is a really timeless design I think. And the bedding hosts a hive of little bees fit for a little Josephine.

valentine's day valentine's day

The lamps are great looking and quite a good price. This gourd lamp is $119, plus the shade at $25.

valentine's day valentine's day

Cute lamp reminiscent of Jaime Young. Painted ceramic, comes in a bunch of colors (as does the gourd lamp), and different shade choices. $69! Plus a shade at $25. This is not a tiny little lamp either. It stands 22" high. (Sometimes with a price like this I double check the size to make sure it is not a mini lamp.)

valentine's day valentine's day

And there are area rugs and window coverings as well. I thought this woven rug (comes in other colors also) was very nice!

I was very impressed overall. Restoration Hardware has great things that blend in with many different decors, so I was very pleased to discover this site. Hope you will be too. Worth a visit for sure.

valentine's day Black and White: Done Right!

Thankyou to the Washington Post for including this post in your Blog Watch, March 6, 2008!
There is a lot of black and white being strewn about in the name of new and trendy design. It's fun, it's fresh. But I have been seeing some really classic interiors that have some real staying power and sophistication, while also being very modern and unique. I wanted to draw a little more attention to these.

This entry hall by designer Jill Van Tosh combines traditional architecture with contemporary art: painting by Todd Murphy through Lowe Gallery. By combining the modern and traditional elements in this space, the designer has really made it so much more interesting. "Stunning" is word that comes to mind.

Ms. Van Tosh continues with the black and white scheme in the Living Room. Ebonized oak floors contrast with white walls and furniture showing off the architectural details. I love how she uses the flea market-find porcelain dogs in contrast with the Xavier Lust white lacquered bench ((MDF Italia). The dogs would seem trite in an interior that was too Hollywood Regency, but here mixed with the other high style furnishings, she really pulls it off. Sofas are by Christian Liagre for Holly Hunt.

This image is from the guest room. You can catch a glimpse of the Eames chaise, and when mixed with the red Swedish style clock and a photograph of Audrey Hepburn, this clever combo really works!

O at Home, Spring 2008, photo by Roger Davies

This Dining Room is the handy work of Mindy Weiss, event planner to the stars (Gwen Stefani, Quincy Jones, Heidi Klum and Brooke Shields to name a few!) A Flea Market collector, she has a knack for putting it all together with alot of style. I love her black and white scheme with punches of blue from her collection of Chinese blueware. She inherited the Dining table from her mother, as well as the sideboard. Again, mixing old and new is what it is all about for me! Thomas Paul rug and wall color is Field Gray # 32-19 from Pratt and Lambert. Elkins Dining Chairs from Grace Home Collection.

Designer Betty Burgess, who previously worked with Dan Carithers, creates a soothing retreat in this guest bedroom. The black and white is warmed up with a seagrass rug. I am a white linen girl, so this room would make me feel right at home. The wool blanket at the end of the bed adds that tiny bit of the unexpected, which is something I always appreciate.

Don't you always want to catch a glimpse of the private spaces of trend setters? This Black and White Dining Room belongs to the creative director of Gucci, Frida Giannini. Don't you just adore the Murano Glass Chandelier? The table and chairs are Parisian Art Deco. The embodiment of style...and one would expect no less from this style maker.

This is Frida's Black and White Master Bathroom. Again, a style victory with it's custom Boffi tub out of Corian with a backdrop of black marble. Brilliant!

valentine's day valentine's day

I first saw this table in the March issue of Elle Decor Magazine on the Insider Trading page. So I scurried on over to the Ralph Pucci website and found this stunning photo of the Mondrian Cocktail Table by Herve Van der Straeten. (Find out more about the fascinating Mr. Herve Van der Straeten in a great post by Habitually Chic here). Not only is this table a piece of art, but it is shown in a black and white space that does it justice. The table is made with a parchment top inlaid with bronze. Beautiful!

I originally saw this black and white lacquer chest on Turquoise Chic blog. It is from 1st dibs and going for $5200. I had to go check out the details on 1st dibs because I just thought maybe there is some way I can get my hands on it. And because you just never know when $5200 might just fall into your lap. With just a little nosing around, I found this picture of the chest in a room (showroom?). It does start to give one ideas!

Here is a close-up. I may have to pillage the kids' college fund.

valentine's day jettmodern

Phew! Finally a day to myself, and what do I want to do? SHOP! I have been wanting to visit a wonderful new shop run by a couple of the best (in my humble opinion) designers in Sacramento. (And they really are a couple.)

valentine's day valentine's day

Linda and Tim Arbogast , the husband and wife team that formed Arbogast Design Group in Sacramento, California have just opened jettmodern.

Jettmodern is a fantastic, wonderful "modern" boutique that specializes in: chic gifts, home furnishings, tchotchke, vintage upholstery and found objects. When they first opened, people were thinking of "modern" in terms of midcentury "dwr" terms. However, Linda and Tim are setting their own standards of what is modern, and thankfully so! Take a look at the definition on their wall above.

Here are some pictures of the shop for you to drool over:

This found awning is fantastic, and they have arranged it over a great mirror and French commode.

valentine's day valentine's day

I love this combination of vintage baker's rack and birdcage with these green silk armless chairs. Don't miss the wonderful "crown" chandelier!

valentine's day valentine's day

A close-up of the white lamp from the previous picture. The shop is located in an historical building in "Old Sacramento". (Those bricks are over 150 years old.)

valentine's day valentine's day

The way Linda and Tim have selected items for the shop reflects their obvious design talent. I love this red Chinoiserie cabinet with the art and finds arranged on the wall. I know you all have a thing about antlers, but I am still enamoured!

valentine's day valentine's day

Another shot of the area showing a collection of vintage glove forms. Great Faux Bois table too!

valentine's day valentine's day

Great Jonathan Adler sideboard! Custom upholstery available. Loving the starburst mirror here. Oh! And they have put together these mini-planters inside escargot shells. Brilliant!

valentine's day valentine's day

You will also find Dwell and John Robshaw bedding and pillows here, as well as Jonathan Adler and many other favorite designers of mine.

valentine's day valentine's day

Just some more of the wonderful stuff to be found here. I love the limed wood candle holders, mercury glass spheres, and...and...oh there is something everywhere I turn!

I also have to say that I had a great time talking with Linda when I went in today. She was warm and gracious and very fun to talk to. Needless to say, we were definitely on the same design wavelength.

I have been waiting AGES for a shop like this to open in Sacramento, and all I can say is: IT'S ABOUT TIME! Thank you soooo much Linda and Tim!
