valentine's day Lick it Bite it Or Both

When I was in Austin in late October, my mother and I stopped in to Lick it Bite it Or Both for some cupcakes. As the name suggests, the shop offers ice cream, cupcakes or both for one's sweet indulgences. What makes this one stop shop unique is that all offerings are made from scratch on the premises.

The small storefront offered limited seating, complete with markers to decorate your cupcake wrappers. Finished designs were hung on the wall throughout the store. A centralized bulletin board even proudly displayed a CTTC postcard!

The slightly larger than regular cupcakes were a perfect size to share for an afternoon snack. We decided to indulge in two, halving them so we could each try both.

The red velvet was fantastic. Moist while still being fluffy with the proper distinct flavor that red velvet should have. The cream cheese frosting was the topic of quite a bit of debate between my mother and I. She immediately declared her love for the rich frosting while I immediately wrote it off as being too sweet. Bite after bite it began to grow on me and I have to admit that it is in fact one of the better commercial cream cheese frostings I have consumed. Moms know best.

The bavarian cream was a clear favorite - moist white cake filled with bavarian cream filling and topped with chocolate ganache. The bavarian cream aided in creating the ideal balance of crumbly and creamy and perfectly balanced the sweet ganache.

Cupcakes are reasonably priced at $2.50 each or buy 5 get 1 free. For $5 you can get a cupcake and ice cream pairing that is sure to satisfy your sweet cravings. Daily offerings are adorably printed on a colorful chalkboard as well as set out for display in these miniature cake stands.

In addition to their already reasonable prices, two ongoing discounts are offered:

valentine's day Thanksgiving turkey cupcake with a Nutter Butter and candy corn, plus Baked Alaska ice cream-filled cupcakes

The always-creative Jeanne Benedict has given her spin to the Thanksgiving turkey cupcake. She writes:

Sweet yes; yet ominous too. Obvious candies give this holiday cupcake his character. What I mean are his eyes made from the tips of candy corns and a dab of frosting. Somehow, when I photographed it, it stared back as if to say, “Don’t even think of eating me as a cupcake or otherwise.” Your kids will love, love, love this turkey cupcake. Basically, you turn a frosted cupcake on its side, stick a Nutter Butter Cookie in it and then feather it with candy corns to make an adorable holiday cupcake. I used a red fruit roll-up as his wattle.

And the Baked Alaska cupcakes (click for recipe) have ice cream inside them!
