While the new store carries new challenges, I’ve already started enjoying the many benefits. In a brick-and-mortar location, only one employee on duty needs to have the food handling certification, and since I’ve been practically living in the store since we’ve opened, I’ve had that requirement covered. Many of my new employees here already have this certification, but I’ve also been able to hire and train those who don’t, and they’re able to begin work for me while getting certified concurrently. I think this distinction between the mobile food truck and brick-and-mortar licensing requirement has allowed me to bring on an exceptional staff.

Having a brick-and-mortar location also makes business a lot less contingent on weather. During the blizzard we experienced at the end of December 2010, we were unable to bring out our cupcake truck but had a steady day of business at 70 Greenwich. I also assume that in the summer when the temperatures outside get into the 90s, the cupcakes will be a lot easier to maintain in the brick-and-mortar location as compared to on the cupcake truck.

Johnny Cupcakes announced on Twitter that his next store (after shops in Hull and Boston, Massachusetts, and Los Angeles) will be opening March 12th in London, UK. There is a small chance I may be able to go! If not, London is on my list of places to visit in 2011 and that will mean a definite cupcake meetup.



Also? His Hello Kitty cupcake collaborations, including t-shirts and a tote bag, are selling out fast. This sticker (below) is still for sale!

Cupcake Camp Montreal will now take place on Sunday November 21, 2010 from 1-5pm at Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth.

To make this event a success we need not only cupcake bakers but also cupcake eaters. A $10 donation entitles attendees to admission to the event, 3 cupcakes, and a gourmet coffee. We don’t want any leftovers so we need A LOT of people to attend the event to eat all 15,000 cupcakes. The global “Cupcake Camp” phenomenon is finally coming to Los Angeles for a uniquely delicious charity fundraiser with a style befitting the showbiz capital of the world.

On Saturday, November 20th, Cupcake Camp L.A. will give local cupcake lovers a chance to sample creations from the region’s best commercial and amateur bakers, several of whom are planning to debut unique holiday-themed and wedding cupcakes.

valentine's day We heart Bakerella and Cake Pops

I've had a tumultuous day, and will be posting more about our small but delightful meetup and Bakerella soon. My iPhone got stolen at Grand Central today - totally my fault for plugging it in a few tables away from where we were sitting and not watching it like a hawk; one minute it was there, the next minute someone had stolen it. It's an excuse to upgrade to a G4. But I want to post about Bakerella! She had by my estimation over 200 people at Williams-Sonoma for her Cake Pops signing.

I was running late so wasn't there at the start where she gave this very blog a shoutout and told me she was inspired to make the cupcake cake pops so that we'd post them. Well, we love Bakerella and are thrilled that her cake pops and cookbook have taken off in a huge way.
